Increase Your Metabolism

Is there a connection between food and metabolism? Actually there are many types of food and drinks that increase your metabolic activity.  Which food should you eat and which drinks should you drink to increase you metabolism and thus increase your weight loss?  Many weight loss dieters around the world are probably wondering if there are any foods that that have the ability to increase your fat metabolism which in turn aid the body’s fat burning capability for the purpose of loosing weight.

If you try to lose weight by skipping meals or not eat at all, your metabolism will decrease which is the opposite of losing fat.  Each time you significantly reduce calories to lose weight you’ll experience a temporary decrease of 5-10 percent in metabolism.  Any extremes of temperature you experience will help raise your metabolism by up to 20 percent as the body attempts to cool you down or raise your temperature.

Your metabolism is primary determined by your body composition: the more total fat-free mass you have the higher your resting metabolic rate will be.  Our metabolism (or metabolic rate) is the rate or speed at which the body burns, or "turns" food into energy (i.  Activity, such as my bicycle riding needs energy, and revs up the metabolic rate, that is, the speed with which the energy is formed.

Resting metabolic rate, also basal metabolic rate, is the number of calories you would burn in a day without any activity at all and accounts for about two-thirds of energy expended every day.  If your metabolic rate is high then your body will burn more calories and vice-versa.  Lean body weight is more metabolically active than fat weight although an interesting point is the fatter person will burn almost the same amount of calories during exercise but the leaner person burns more calories at rest.

If you don't consume the proper amount of calories you will send your body into what is known as a survival mode.  Dieting forces the body into starvation mode which slows down the metabolism to conserve energy and calories.  On top of the empty calories that alcohol contains, it also has a dehydrating effect, which slows down your thermic metabolism.

As you eat less to lose weight, your body goes into survival mode and your metabolism slows down.  Do not eat much late at night, though, as sleep slows your metabolism down.  How many times have you heard someone say, “as soon as you hit 30 your metabolism slows down”?
